‘AS THE LIGHT MAKES ITS WAY’

A man had lived in his imagination.

Ever since he was a boy.

For it was full of wonder and adventure
when set against the outer world
that housed his everyday life.

His imagination surrounded him in light.
The outer world, in a darker shade.

But as he waited for this outer world
to catch the light,
he realised that it might not.

And so he stepped out into the world,
hand in hand with his imagination.

Knowing that together they would
bring light to the darkest of corners.

And he is you. And me.

And together, the imagination of
our collective soul
has already begun its inevitable work.

As the light makes its way
towards the experience of the world.

‘A SIGNIFICANT CRIME’

The first victim of a
significant crime
lies desolate, and alone.

Disconnected from the world
that surrounds her.

Desperately searching for
just one good reason.

The crime, purposeful
exclusion by another.

Often unnoticed by others,
but always with the
capacity to remove sight
of a worthwhile horizon.

The second victim, the
perpetrator.

Pushing themselves further
into self loathing.
And further from the
possibility of their
one hallowed life.

And then, BOOM.

In the flicker of a single
moment, each might recognize
his or her own reflection
in the other’s gaze.

Dark might turn to light.
Hate to love. And
significant crime to
even more significant embrace.

THE STREETS OF ANYWHERE

On the streets of anywhere lives a man.

The same man.

Homeless and alone in the world.

The tears that fill his eyes go by
silent, and unnoticed.

Tears that cry out for a simple glimpse of the
certainty that he’s a brother to us all.

That he belongs.

But you & I dare not look.
Lest we catch such a glimpse.

A glimpse that might show us the
frailty of our own humanity.

A glimpse that might admit that we are, and
always have been, more than brothers.

THE BOY WHO WOULD LEAP

He’s somewhere between thirty & forty.

Perhaps fifty. Maybe sixty.

He wants to play. Without prescription.

He wants to stamp. And to stomp.
And to run. And to leap from chair to chair.

He wants to shout. And to scream words he
just made up. At the top of his voice.

And not to look at who’s looking.

He wants to tell his best friend it’s
OK to make believe. And to
tell his parents that he loves them.

Perhaps he will.

Tomorrow.

Four friends set out
from where they stood.

One went North. One East.
Another South.
The last one, West.

Each in search of meaning.
Each in search of the
point of their own life.

Three would continue along the
never ending road of
becoming someone.

Each of them assuming they
needed to be somewhere
other than where they were.

But one would come to know
the significance of standing still.
